Fear and Greed are called the two emotions that command the entire financial market. But psychology reveals a surprising truth: they are not opposites — they are two faces of a single force. Fear is the fear of losing what you have. Greed is the fear of losing what you might have (the opportunity). Both are fear of loss — and this is why the cure for both is identical: fixed rules set in advance, before either emotion arises. This lesson analyzes the forms of fear, the forms of greed, and the 4-step system for removing both from your decisions.
Fear in trading is a reaction of the brain's self-defense system (the amygdala), which was designed for physical danger — not financial risk. When a position turns red, this part of the brain fires an "escape!" signal, exactly as it would at the sight of a snake. The result: logical technical rules are overridden in favor of excessive self-protection. The key point: you cannot switch the amygdala off, but you can shrink the "danger" it perceives — by keeping your loss size so small that it no longer looks like a threat.
• Cutting Winners Early: Exiting a profitable trade too soon out of anxiety that the market will reverse, missing out on your larger planned target.
• Panic Selling: Liquidating a position prematurely during minor market noise before the price actually violates your technical setup or invalidation level.
Recall the lesson's core insight: greed is the fear of losing the opportunity. When price surges or others post profits, the brain fires a fear of missing the chance at wealth — so it wants too much, too fast. In that state the brain sees only what might be gained and goes blind to what might be lost, which is why greed makes you overlook risk and violate your own capital management rules.
• Refusing to Take Profit: Holding onto winning positions past your technical targets because you assume it will go up forever, only to watch it reverse into a loss.
• Chasing Highs (FOMO): Impulsively buying into a parabolic price rally late in the trend without any structured stop loss execution plan.
